 Volleyball in a nutshell -

The Sport of Volleyball like Basketball was invented in almost similar circumstances on February 9th 1895 in Holyoke Massachusetts, USA. It was created as a pastime indoor sport by a YMCA Physical education director named William G. Morgan, who himself was a graduate of the YMCA college in Springfield Massachusetts (The Birthplace of Basketball). He designed the game to be a combination of handball, tennis, basketball and baseball, with a clear aim of attracting older members of the YMCA to participate in a less physical but competitive athletic sport.

At first Volleyball was called Mintonette but the name later changed to Volley-ball (and finally to Volleyball) at the suggestion of an exhibition match delegate called Professor Alfred T. Halstead who observed that the main premise of the game was to “Volley” the ball to a player or to “Volley” the ball over the net during the game’s first exhibition match in July 1896.

In its first introduction on the world stage, the game was added as a medal event at the 1964 summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

The number 77 on the right hand sleeve celebrates the 1977 FIVB (The International Volleyball Federation) Women's U20 World Championship held in Brazil from Sept. 5th to 14th, 1977. 14 teams participated in the tournament and it was the first junior world championships ever held.
