In a nutshell -
The sport of American Football can be traced to earlier forms of rugby football and Association soccer football that were played around Europe, and especially in England around the early 1800’s. And as these football and rugby sports began to break away from one another due to differing rules and new rule changes meant that the public schools in England began to adopt their very own rules during each play.
In American colleges, the adoption of different rules was present in the football games that were played at each college, although most of the games played at the time bore similar resemblance to the disorganized “no holds barred” version of a mob style football that originated in England, where for instance, a large number of players will attempt to move the ball into the goal area by any means necessary, which could in some cases include violent means etc.
And on November 6, 1869, Rutgers University faced Princeton University (formerly known as the College of New Jersey) in what is arguably the first-ever game of intercollegiate football. This game is seen by some as being the first game under modified London Football Association rules that will ultimately lead to the birth of American Football as it is known today after subsequent rules were implemented.
The pivotal dates for American Football as described by historian Parke H. Davis, who himself was a former American football player and coach named the years between 1869 to 1875 as the ‘Pioneer Period’, 1876 to 1893 as the ‘Period of the American Intercollegiate Football Association’ and the years between 1894 to 1933 as the ‘Period of Rules Committees and Conferences’.
The NFL or National Football League, was founded in 1920 but it was first called the American professional football association (APFA) until 1922 when the name changed to its current name and the Superbowl which is the premier championship event in American Football was first played on January 15 1967.
