Rugby was born the moment a young player refused to follow the crowd. In 1823, at Rugby School, a boy picked up the ball during a football match and ran forward—breaking the pattern, breaking the rules, and creating a new way to compete. That single act of rebellion became a global movement built on courage, contact, and community.

Rugby in a nutshell -

The modern sport of Rugby is widely known to have been established at the Rugby school in England, and a famous myth about its early origins dates back to the year 1823 when it is believed that a 16 year old rugby school student named William Webb Ellis “with a fine disregard for the rules of football, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the rugby game.”

The first set of rules are believed to have been written in 1845 by 3 school pupils, as was the case during the early years for informal rules to be agreed before each game by the players themselves instead of a school coach or teacher.

Several rule changes and some rule disputes led to splits between the prestigious Rugby club called the “Blackheath club” and the football association in 1863 that subsequently led to the formation of the rugby football union in 1871.

Another code was formed in 1895 due to further rule and conduct disagreements, especially relating to the payment of some players that also led to the formation of the rugby league.
