100 Metre Dash in a nutshell -

The 100 metre sprint dash at the summer olympics remains one of the most prestigious athletic track and field events, followed closely by the world athletic championships that began in 1983.

The early race events began as a sprint race for men at the Athens summer olympic games in 1896 with the race winner famously nicknamed "the fastest man in the world", while the ladies equivalent started at the 1928 summer olympic games in Amsterdam.

Notable milestones in the sport of the 100 metre sprint dash include,

The first winner of the 100 metre dash was an American sprinter called Thomas Burke, and he won the race in 12.0 seconds.

Another American by the name of Archie Hahn won the gold medal in 1904 at the same event and at an improved time of 11.0 seconds, while famously renowned American sprinter Jesse Owens won the gold at the 1936 Berlin summer olympics at a time of 10.3 seconds.

The first person to break the 10 second barrier was American Jim Hines at a record time of 9.95 seconds at the 1968 Mexico City games.

In 1988, the sprint record will be shattered once more by an American sprinter named Carl Lewis at a time of 9.92 seconds at the Seoul olympics.

The current record holder for men is Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt after recording a time of 9.58 seconds at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, while the record holder for women is American sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner who at the Seoul olympics in 1988 recorded a time of 10.49 seconds.
