Golf In a nutshell

Origins of Golf (Pre-15th Century)

It is believed that Games involving hitting a ball with a stick existed in ancient Rome (paganica), parts of China, and the Netherlands.

However, the modern roots of golf are most strongly linked to Scotland between the 15th to 18th Century.

The First written record of golf was in 1457 in Scotland, when King James II was known to have banned it because it distracts from archery practice.

The game flourished along Scotland’s Leith links coastal terrain, and St Andrews in Scotland becomes the spiritual home of golf.

The First Rules of Golf was published in 1744 and titled “Articles & Laws in Playing at Golf” Written by: The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, for competitions played on Leith Links with a total number of 13 rules.

By 1764, 18 holes becomes the norm at St Andrews.

The early golf clubs were made of wood; and the balls were stuffed with feathers (“featheries”).

Notable expansion of the game (19th Century):

1860: The first Open Championship (British Open) is played.

Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A) helps formalize the rules.

Golf spreads to England, Ireland, and the British Empire, then to the United States.

Golf in America & Global Growth (Late 19th–Early 20th Century)

1895: Formation of the United States Golf Association (USGA).

The First U.S. Open tournament is also held in 1895 at the Newport Golf Club, Newport, Rhode Island.
