Cycling in a nutshell

The first ever bicycle or cycling race took place in Paris France at the Parc de Saint Cloud, on May 31, 1868. The distance was 1200 metres and the race was won by an Englishman named James Moore, who also went on to win the first cycling road race a year later in 1869 between two cities from Paris to Rouen, also in France at a race distance of 123 kilometres and lasting about 10 hours and 40 minutes.

Historically cycling began the new frontier in man-made racing objects on two wheels, and this passion for speed continued with the first world championship events taking place in 1893, while cycling also became an event at the modern Olympic games held in Athens, Greece in 1896.

Other historic and prestigious cycling events include Belgium’s Liege to Bastogne and back to Liege road race (Established since 1892), Paris to Roubaix (Established since 1896), the tour de France (Established since 1903), Milan San Remo and Giro Di Lombardia in Italy (Established since 1903), The Giro Di Italia (Established since 1906), The Volta A Catalunya in Spain (Established since 1911), and the Tour of Flanders in Belgium (Established since 1913).

In the USA, Bicycle racing was promoted mainly by the St. Louis Cycling Club which has been sponsoring time distance events and races since 1887.
