In a nutshell -

The sport of Boxing is arguably one of the oldest forms of competitive and spectator events in the world and its first major introduction into organized sporting circles began when it was added as an event at the Olympic Games in ancient Greece in the year BC 688.

As an organized sport, boxing is believed to have evolved from more brutal forms of combative and self-defence prize fight events that have been frequent in different parts of the world over many centuries.

Earlier forms of boxing involved bare knuckle fist fights, and then progressed into gloved boxing fights, as a way for fighters to further equip themselves against their opponents. The gloves used during those earlier fight events are known to have included leather thongs around the fists, and will later include much harder leather gloves that were introduced as a more effective weapon.

Legend also has it that the Roman Amphitheatres where fighters were pegged together to please the watching spectators, usually involved fights that lasted until one fighter died from their injuries due to a more sinister glove called a “Cestus” and a “Myrmex” or ‘Limb Piercer’ that had metal studs in the leather thongs.

Spectator events at the Roman Amphitheatres are also believed to have included fights between purchased slaves, trained combat performers and Gladiator fighters, but later boxing was abolished in the year AD 393 due to its highly brutal nature.

Modern Boxing began to resurface as an organized sport in European circles and especially in London, England during the late 16th century, but it wasn’t until 1867 that a set of rules published in England under the patronage of the Marquess of Queensberry that also bore his name titled The “Queensberry rules”, which began what most consider to be the first set of rules that are still the original basis of the current rules in the modern era.

The rules consisted of 12 main rules, some of which included 3 minute boxing rounds with one minute rest intervals between each round, a ten second count if a fighter was knocked down, and any form of wrestling in a boxing match was also prohibited. The gloves used were of a “fair size” that resembled a bloated pair of mittens laced up around the wrists.

Modern boxing is a popular feature at many prize fight and international events and it also remains a main feature at the Olympic games since the modern Olympic games began in 1896. Professional boxing continues to produce some of the most popular sporting spectacles the world over.
