Cricket in a Nutshell

The history of Cricket is believed to date as far back as the medieval times in England. And the first references to the game were known to begin around the early 17th century, especially in the south-eastern English counties, with the very first known cricket game taking place around 1611.

In 1744, the Laws of Cricket were codified for the first time and then amended in 1774, when innovations such as lbw, a third stump, middle stump and maximum bat width were added. The game's rules are also defined in the "Laws of cricket".

The governing body for the game of Cricket is known as the International Cricket Council (ICC), which has over one hundred countries and territories in it's membership, with only twelve currently playing in the Test cricket series events.

The game of Women’s Cricket is known to have begun in 1745, when the first known match was played in Surrey, England.

The sport was introduced to North America in the 17th century, and it arrived in other parts of the world in the 18th century, especially in the old English colonies,  such as the West Indies by colonists and to India by the British East India Company mariners. It arrived in Australia in 1788 and New Zealand and South Africa in the early years of the 19th century etc.
