Baseball in a nutshell -
The New York Knickerbockers 'Base Ball Club' remain one of the few clubs to be credited with forming the rules for the modern sport of baseball. The rules drafted by the Knickerbockers on september 23rd 1845 are arguably a pivotal part of the modern game.
However, there are questions as to whether the rules formed in 1845 are the original basis for the modern game, as a few other rules that predated the formation of the knickerbocker rules have some resemblance to the modern game.
But it is widely believed that some of the rules implemented by the New York Knickerbockers are a true reflection of some aspects of the modern game, especially with the introduction of the 'foul territory' where players must be tagged or forced out at a base rather than being pegged with the ball.
And on June 19, 1846, the New York Knickerbockers played what is arguably the first baseball game against an opposing club, who were known as the New York Nine, the Knickerbockers lost the game by a score of 23-1.
But legend has it that the Knickerbockers only lost because their best players were too reluctant to travel across the Hudson river, since the team had been forced to move from their previous playing field in Manhattan to a vacant lot across the Hudson river at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey.
