🏀 Basketball in a Nutshell

Origins (1891)

Basketball was created in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian‑American physical education instructor at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. He published the first 13 rules on December 21, 1891, with a simple objective: pass the ball, work as a team, and score by throwing it into a fruit basket nailed to the gym balcony.

Early games used actual peach baskets with the bottoms still intact, meaning play had to stop after every score so a janitor could climb a ladder to retrieve the ball. The bottoms were later removed so the ball could drop through freely.

Early Milestones

  • March 11, 1892 — First public basketball game played in Springfield.

  • 1898 — The first professional league, the National Basketball League, formed with six teams (active until 1904).

  • Followed by other early leagues:

    • Eastern Basketball League (1909)

    • Metropolitan Basketball League (1921)

    • American Basketball League (1925)

Black Basketball & Segregation Era (1906–1950)

The first independent all‑Black basketball teams emerged in 1906, led by the Smart Set Athletic Club (Brooklyn) and the St. Christopher Club (NYC). In 1907, they joined other clubs to form the Olympian Athletic League, an all‑Black amateur league in New York City. Segregation in major leagues persisted until 1950, when the NBA officially integrated.

College Basketball (1905–1939)

  • April 1905 — A college committee took control of the rules through the Basket Ball Rule Committee.

  • 1909 — This body was absorbed into the newly formed NCAA.

  • 1939 — The first NCAA Basketball Tournament tipped off, marking the birth of March Madness.

Rise of the NBA & WNBA

  • June 1946 — The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded.

  • 1949 — The BAA merged with the NBL and became the National Basketball Association (NBA).

  • April 1996 — The NBA approved the creation of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Global Expansion

  • 1904 Olympics — Basketball appeared as a demonstration sport.

  • 1936 Olympics — Became an official medal sport in Berlin.

  • June 18, 1932FIBA (International Basketball Federation) was founded to govern the sport globally.

  • 1950 — The first FIBA World Championship (now the FIBA World Cup) was held in Argentina.
