Football in a nutshell -
The “beautiful game” as most around the world refer to the game most commonly known as football, or as some in other parts of the world refer to as soccer, is believed to have been first played around 2000 years ago in ancient China, and similar forms played in ancient Greece, north and central America, as well as in Rome etc. The earlier form in China was called “Cuju” which literally means “Kick Ball”.
Many of the earlier forms involved both the using of the hands and foot, and in particular, the medieval localised versions of the game, especially in Europe, could be classified as a form of “mob football” or medieval football typically involving neighbouring towns and villages competing against each other, by gathering an unlimited number of opposing players who literally clash “by any means possible” in other to drag an inflated ‘pig’s bladder’ in the form of a ball to positioned markers at each end of the opposing teams town or village. And legend has it that “any means” could be used to physically move the ball towards the goal as long as it did not lead to a more heinous act such as manslaughter or murder.
The modern rules of Football were formulated with the creation of the Football Association in London, England between October to December 1863, and the English FA Cup remains the world’s oldest competition with contests first taking place between English teams from November 1871 up to March 1872, while the first international football match under modern football rules was between Scotland and England held in Glasgow, Scotland in 1872.
Football events have been included at the Summer Olympic Games since 1900 and women’s football was added at the 1996 olympics. The FIFA world Cup championships which is the most prestigious event in football was first played in 1930, with the women's equivalent first taking place in 1991.
